Real Recipe: Raisin Pecan Butter Tarts

Real Recipe adapted from our RealFoodToronto.com staff.

RFT-Raisin-Pecan-Butter-Tarts-SMALLThere’s absolutely no question – butter tarts are a definitively Canadian dessert. They’re a classic baked treat enjoyed during the holidays and adored by all. Ooey-gooey or just plain runny; that sticky-sweet filling keeps you coming back for more!

The filling that overflows the pastry hardens quickly and sticks to the pan, so be sure to remove the tarts and let cool as directed. Alternatively, you can always count on family members to hang around the kitchen waiting to eat the tarts that stick and break 😉

Real Recipe: Pumpkin Spice Smoothie

Original Recipe by Kim D’Eon for KimDeon.com

Pumpkin Spice Smoothie-1-SMIt’s that time of year when millions take to the internet to declare their undying love for Pumpkin Spice Lattes from you know where.

I wanted to partake in the fun in my own signature style, which you likely know by now is to make it into a smoothie. Since the popular “PSL” doesn’t actually have any pumpkin in it, I’m giving you this easy and delicious recipe that obviously includes fall’s signature squash as a main ingredient.

Beside the fact that it’s packed with fibre, beta carotene and healthy fats from coconut, flax and hemp, the other great thing about my PS smoothie is that is can easily be served hot as well.

Real Recipe: Carrot Cake Smoothie

Original Recipe by Kim D’Eon for KimDeon.com

CarrotCakeSmoothie-3-SMSince fall is here, I wanted to share this decadent carrot cake smoothie because fall reminds me of carrot cake. Is that weird?

This carrot cake smoothie is ridiculously simple to make with 6 easy real food ingredients. I can, honestly, tell you that I like this smoothie more than carrot cake itself and, of course, it doesn’t have any of the refined sugars or flours.

Carrots are full of the antioxidant beta-carotene, which turns into vitamin A in our bodies, and helps support eye and mucosal health. I love that. I also love the word mucosal. Don’t you?

Real Recipe: Basic Green Smoothie

Original Recipe by Kim D’Eon for KimDeon.com

BasicGreenSmoothie-4-SMFor the days when you just want to do a straight ahead, simple and tasty green smoothie, I’ve got you covered with this “basic” green smoothie. It’s very easy to make and is as refreshing as it is satisfying.

You know how I love smoothies for breakfast because it makes it so easy to jam a ton of great nutrients into the top of your day. Whizzing the food also helps to partially break it down, which is easy on your digestive system. The addition of lemon here also increases digestion not to mention gives it a nice, fresh kick. But, please don’t guzzle your smoothies. That’s a lot of food up in there and your body still needs time to work its digestion magic in your belly. So, just sip slowly please :)

Real Recipe: Pumpkin Muffins

Original article published by Katherine Mossop for KatherineMossop.com

RFT_Pumpkin_MuffinsThe leaves haven’t started turning yet, but there is a definite chill in the evening air and the bountiful fall harvest will soon be making its appearance at the markets. The fall harvest is one of my favourites and with cooler temperatures and a wonderful variety of nourishing and comforting foods, this is the time of year I love being in the kitchen.

Winter squashes are one of my favourite foods of the season, particularly the pumpkin. Pumpkin is versatile and works really well in both savoury and sweet dishes. Whether it’s pumpkin soup or pumpkin pie, it’s super tasty and nicely packs a healthy, nutritional punch.

Original Recipe by Kim D’Eon for KimDeon.com

MintChocolateChipSmoothie-5-SMWho says you can’t have your mint chocolate chip and still be healthy too? The processed food industry may have got you hooked on sugary ice creams, cookies and candy, but you don’t have to abandon some of your favourite flavours when you’re taking care of yourself and the proof is in this smoothie 😉

The antioxidant power of this smoothie is nothing to scoff at. Raw cacao and mint are both antioxidant powerhouses! Plus, cacao is a known mood booster and mint is great for digestion! Double bonus! (Make sure to get raw cacao and raw cacao powder and the darker the chocolate chips, the better).

Real Recipe: Orange U Peachy Smoothie

Original Recipe by Kim D’Eon for KimDeon.com

Orange U Peachy Smoothie 3You know from their nice orange colour that both oranges and peaches pack a good dose of beta-carotene and vitamin C. This means you’ll get a load of antioxidants when sipping on this pretty peach smoothie as well as be protecting your eyes, lungs and skin.

Peaches are best in the summer when they are in season and super-ripe. Just the thought of biting into a sweet, juicy peach makes my mouth water (power of the mind, BTW).

Sometimes, when my peaches are fully ripe and I can’t get through them all, I just cut them into chunks and freeze them on a cookie sheet. Once they’re frozen, I pop them into a ziplock bag so they’re ready for smoothies like this one.

Real Recipe: Berry Beety Smoothie

Original Recipe by Kim D’Eon for KimDeon.com

Berry Beety 7On top of being one of the most gorgeous colours of burgundy you’ll ever see, this simple, spicy and sweet smoothie is a nutritional powerhouse!

All those rich, dark colours mean a ton of antioxidants and vitamins like A and C. Plus, beets and ginger are known to be some of the most potent detoxifying foods you can eat (or drink)!

Berry Beety 1Grating the raw beets will make them easier to blend. Just make sure to protect your cutting board or counter top with a piece of parchment paper (and if you’re worried about staining your hands, wear gloves). Grate a few extra beets and save them in the fridge to add to your salads through the week! I threw a few beet greens into this smoothie to further increase its nutrient value. Ah yeah, I did!

Real Recipe: Great Grapefruit Smoothie

Original Recipe by Kim D’Eon for KimDeon.com

Great-Grapefruit-4-1600pxThere’s nothing quite like slicing into a perfectly ripe grapefruit! So juicy and vibrantly pink and …the smell! I swear, just the smell of fresh grapefruit puts me in a good mood. (There’s actually a lot of studies indicating that the smell of citrus has many positive effects on your health. So go ahead and inhale deeply when you’re making this refreshing, delicious smoothie!)

This is a straightforward fruit smoothie. I usually add veggies to my smoothies, but sometimes it’s nice to just change it up a bit. It’s a sweet treat to include on occasion. Plus, since you’re using the whole fruit and not just the juice, you’re getting a lot of fibre. That, coupled with the addition of healthy fats like coconut oil & milk plus hemp seeds, will all help slow the digestion of sugars. Cinnamon is a great blood sugar stabilizer as well!
